Due to a bug in the Ubuntu generic graphics card drivers we could reproduce an X-server termination resulting in a new login screen.
The graphics card drivers shipped with Ubuntu do not correctly handle the "Direct Rendering Infrastructure".
For remedy, please install a native driver from your graphics card as described below.
Installing a fully 3D accelerated hardware driver with direct rendering support should be pretty straightforward for Ubuntu 8.04 and higher.
In the top menu bar of your GNOME desktop, select "System" -> "Administration" -> "Hardware Drivers" (see the screenshot attached below.)
Please ensure that you have a working network connection. Ubuntu will try to identify your graphics hardware and locate appropriate drivers for this card. The tool presents you a list of available drivers. Choose the one that has the "[recommended]" status.
After selecting the driver, click the "Activate" button. The driver will now be downloaded, installed and configured. Please note that this may take some time, depending on your connection and system speed.
Once the driver has been installed, you will need to reboot your system. The restart might be a bit slower, due to the installation of kernel specific modules. After login, the 3D support should now be fully enabled.
